Fiddles/Violins
Stringed instruments in the viol family run in a wide range of sizes and styles, from huge double-basses to tiny "piccolo" violins or children's violins.
In common American English speech, the formal term "violin" is often used interchangeably with the venerable term "fiddle." Sometimes "violin" connotes an orientation to classical music traditions, while "fiddle" is a term more commonly associated with ethnic and folk traditions; all cultural levels of music-making on this family of instruments are well-represented in Kentucky.
