ARTIST BACKGROUND/BIO:
Briana Frederick earned a BFA in Fiber from Kansas City Art Institute in 2007, then served in the Peace Corps in Morocco, working with rural women weavers. She then farmed in the Northeast before settling in Kentucky.
After a long hiatus, she returned to the loom in 2014 after her first child was born and she wanted to wear him. Rather than buy a wrap she bought an old loom & wove her own. She fell deeply back in love with weaving, quickly rediscovering her joy in small wearable color, fiber & texture studies.
In 2019 she was accepted into the Kentucky Arts Council's Kentucky Crafted program, a symbol of artistic excellence and quality craftsmanship.
In 2018 Briana opened Bri Weaves. Her cowls, scarves and neckerchiefs are all handwoven at her home studio, with the finest fiber and color combinations, often including cashmere from her own backyard goats. She aims to create pieces that are both beautiful & functional. Worn around the neck, an unconscious reminder of connections, while tangibly being practical items of body wear for warmth & comfort. Many share a warp, yet every weft is unique, making each finished work one of a kind, complementing the individuality of their eventual owners. Her accessories are made with the bits and scrap from the weaving process, leaving nothing wasted.
In the short series of three Instagram videos linked here, Briana explains that a cowl is
"basically an infinity scarf"...
She also explains how to put them on, with or without the fringe...
Here's a small sampling of Bri's COWLS, SCARVES, AND "RAGE VESTS" — many more (dozens more!) can be seen on her website, with prices ...
Briana Frederick resides in the Chilton neighborhood in Louisville with her husband Josh, three boys (Eldon, Arlo & Remy), two cats and her two Nigora goats, who contribute cashmere for her work and bring joy on their neighborhood walks...
She notes: "The joy of weaving is rivaled only by the joy of seeing the work paired with a wearer." Many wearers of Briana's creations have shared glowing testimonials which can be found on her website...
