David R. Davis lives and works on his family farm in rural Green County, Kentucky, about five miles southwest of Greensburg. In the not-too-distant past his family farm produced and sold honey and sorghum, but his own crafting passion is with knives.
In recent years the honey and sorghum production has been supplanted by Davis's frequent focus on making knives — both fixed-blade and pocket-knives — and showing them at knife shows around the region and beyond. His knives have earned numerous awards at such shows...

While Davis initially created and sold many striking fixed-blade knives under the name "Trammel Creek Handmade Knives," in recent years he has focussed instead on pocket-knives, which are the principal products of his work nowadays...
Making pocket knives is an intricate process, involving complex machining and metal-work, along with hand work in shaping the blades with "nail nicks" (for opening the blades), corkscrews, bottle-opener/screwdriver blades, and more. Davis accomplishes these tasks in a well-equipped and constantly-evolving workshop, filled with specialized machinery. Some of these processes and many of his machines can be seen on his YouTube channel, at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWFY7C9lZZ7ihPBeVh1H-uw
Here are two short workshop videos from Davis's YouTube channel.
One, lasting about 2 minute and 34 seconds shows how the scales that decorate the sides of a pocket knife can be machine-cut. Davis uses many exotic and beautiful materials to enhance the beauty of his pocket knives: mammoth ivory, abalone, amber, and more...
Another, with Davis's voiceover, illustrates how he creates a "coin edge" or "dental cuts" by hand using a jeweler's saw.
Below: a few examples of D.R.Davis's handmade pocket knives, many of which have won awards at the knife shows he visits. Many more can be seen on his website!
Davis makes both innovative and "traditional" pocket knives. In his own words describing the tradition:
"Growing up on the farm everyone carried a pocketknife. At the time slip joints were the only thing available in my area. So, traditional slip joints still have a place in my heart. This three blade stockman with Sambar Stag scales is the standard. A few embellishments such as file work on the back, coin edge on the front, fluted bolsters, integral 12C27 frame round out this knife."
D.R.Davis encourages would-be customers to contact him via email or phone, or better yet, to call to arrange a visit!
